Narwal Freo X Ultra
The Freo X Ultra, a highly-rated and functional Gen 4 robotic vacuum and mop, is a well made machine. The $1400 price tag might be difficult to swallow, however, it is usually on sale to make it more affordable. The unit is stunning, and the base takes up small space in a corner.

The design of this robot addresses a few problems that we have encountered with other robotic mop and vacuum models, for example, the brushes becoming entangled in hair, and the vacuum brush not being able to reach floors that are not covered by furniture. The sweeping performance on carpets and bare floors is also impressive. The vacuum/mop has a high level debris pickup and the mop is able to quickly soak up bare floors.
The mops use a smart system that cleans along the edges of walls and around furniture. The robot can easily avoid obstacles like toys, food bowls and backpacks. It can get tangled or get stuck with smaller, more compact objects such as shoelaces, USB cables and pens.
We used this robot to clean and mop a mix of pile carpet tiles, FLOR carpet and hardwood floors in a large, open house floor plan. It was able to vacuum and mop the area of 90m2 in 170 minutes with FREO Mind enabled. This is about the average for Gen 4 robots.
This robot is distinguished by several features. The Freo X Ultra has a number of software, sensors, and hardware improvements engineered to keep it at the top of its category. It has been declared to have an autonomy of 3.5 hours for environments up to 260m2.
Freo's app lets you modify various functions, such as how often the robot comes back to the base station. You can also change the frequency of mopping and the power level (silent, intelligent) or the mopping humidity. The app can detect heavily dirty spots and create a cleaning route. It can also distribute detergent and raise the carpet pads.
Other impressive features include a quick charging battery, a clear display on the robot's bottom, and a convenient dock door that opens easily. The Freo X Ultra is the most efficient vacuum and mop for home or apartment owners who want to make a difference in their chores while still keeping their homes tidy and clean.
Miele Scout RX3
Miele has a track record of quality and innovation in the world of robot vacuuming. This new model is designed to take cleaning performance to a whole new level, thanks to its smart features.
The RX3 has a dual-suction system and intelligent mapping that incorporates 3D mapping and camera that transmits an image in real-time to your smartphone. The RX3's robust four-stage system provides excellent dust collection on hard and carpet floors. Side brushes that can be swung out, dual suction channels and easy-to-use controls keep corners clean. The 8.5 cm height lets it fit under furniture that is low, and front cameras and infrared sensors help it navigate around obstacles and thresholds with ease.
The Scout RX3 impressed us in our tests on how well it was able to clean baking powder near corners and baseboards. Its suction of 2,500Pa was weaker than the other robots, however it was quiet and moved quickly. It didn't mop, and its removable cleaning pad was difficult to attach. It also couldn't handle dried-on dirt.
Its app is on the basic side with no advanced features such as multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It does support Alexa however its voice controls aren't very intuitive or responsive. It's also a bit sporadic when it returns to the charging station following a run. Other robots can follow a wall or trace the previous route however, the RX3 is a mess until it gives up.
Another issue we encountered was with its smart features, particularly the mapping function and the digital keep-out zones. While it did a decent job of avoiding our furniture legs and shoes but it could easily be hung up by cables and socks, and was unable to handle the tassels on rugs. This is the reason we decided not to include it in our Best Buy list. With a decent price and a dazzling performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering if you're looking for a smarter alternative to traditional uprights.
